english hw: General Election 2006
Monday, May 01, 2006 @ 9:25:00 PM

Vote for People's Action Party (PAP)? Worker's Party? SDP or SDA?

This is the current concern of all Singaporeans. Their very votes will decide their government, their future. So will PAP have yet another victory or will there be some change in the parliament?

As usual, there will slanders and finger-pointing in rallies. Well, and as usual, PAP has a few constituencies uncontested. Out of the seven, two are Marine Parade, led by SM Goh and Tanjong Pagar led by MM Lee. However, compared to the past, PAP faces stronger challenge this year.

Firstly, I 'amazingly' realized that all minsters actually earn monthly salaries higher than any other ministers in the world. To add on to the surprise, I learnt that our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong earns more than the US president. Oh my goodness! Then i thought to myself, so is it true that transparency is lacking in Singapore?

Secondly, I read from the papers that the some Potong Pasir's residents actually think that Mr Chiam See Tong is no longer capable of managing the constituency. I felt upset for Mr Chiam. After all that he had done over the past 22 years for Potong Pasir, this is how the some of residents treat him. Other than MM Lee, he is the next political figure that i admire. Some said that he is too old, but i beg to differ. It is his long experience in political field which is to the advantage of Singapore. Not to be offensive, but if he is too old, then is MM Lee supposed to be out of the political field too?

Thirdly, I am ashamed of what Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) had done. Why do we have to make this election seems like it is for the Party's own benefits? Should not it be for the future of Singapore. I hope to see more hope for the future of Singapore in rallies, rather than finger-pointing at other parties.

There has been an unsolved question in my mind. If there has been an effort to include minorities in the government (as in PAP), why they could not use the same mentality on the issue of having more opposition members in the parliament? I mean must all opposition parties fight so badly in order to get that few seats in the Parliament?

I hope Singapore's future can be bulit based on Democracy and Transparency. Of course, not to forget the 'golden' rights - Freedom of Speech.
